About Tour d’Afrique
The Tour d’Afrique (TDA) is the longest, toughest bicycle race/ expedition in the world. 2012 is the tenth anniversary of the TDA. Every year, Tour d’Afrique Ltd donates at least one new or refurbished bicycle per rider to health-care workers and other deserving individuals in Africa. In the nine years since the creation of the company, Tour d’Afrique Ltd in partnership with our participants and groups such as CAP AIDS (Canada) and Leusden Rotary club in the Netherlands has donated over 1300 bikes. In 2011, the TDA Foundation managed to donate over 350 bikes along the way – the best year yet. In 2012, the tenth anniversary ride, there are donation ceremonies planned for Gondar, Bahir Dar, Nairobi, Arusha, Lilongwe, Windhoek and Cape Town. It is the most ambitious schedule yet, and we hope to donate at least 500 bikes
Cape Town, South Africa Walking long distances each day to visit their patients, these unsung heroes of the community were delighted to receive the donation from the TDA Foundation, which was made possible through the fundraising efforts and generosity of the TDA 2011 riders.
Reach: In a month a community HIV/AIDS volunteer can reach about 20 to 100 people without a pushbike (bicycle), covering a total of about 8 to 15 kilometres. With a pushbike, an HIV/AIDS service provider may reach a minimum of 60 and up to over 800 individuals in a month, covering over 60km.
